About State of the Arts

State of the Arts, the national conference for the arts and culture sector, is returning for its third year and will be hosted by the Arts Council in conjunction with the BBC, Salford City Council and Manchester City Council. The event will be held outside of London for the first time with a particular focus on the artist’s role in contributing to a changing society.

Pre-conference arts events

For the first time, a series of arts events will be held the day before the conference on 13 February 2012 from 6pm. These will include a lecture by renowned theatre director Robert Wilson, a private viewing of the Cotton: Global Threads exhibition at the Whitworth Art Gallery and a concert by inspirational world music duo Amadou and Mariam. This programme of events has been curated by Manchester International Festival in partnership with Cornerhouse, Whitworth Art Gallery, The Hallé and the Royal Northern College of Music.

Who should attend?  

Anyone with an interest in joining in the debate about how artists are shaping the world. This could include artists and senior level staff drawn from the arts, museums, libraries, local authorities, publishing, film, universities, further education and conservatoires.
